Every child experiences emotional difficulties at one point or another. Like adults, they also feel sad, confused, depressed, and anxious. From the “terrible twos” through the teen years, children go through a lot of changes as part of growing up. Some changes in behavior are accompanied by problems that fade on their own or with guidance and support from parents. However, some children develop extreme emotional and behavioral responses to certain situations with alarming symptoms that persist over time.

The realization that your child’s emotional or behavioral condition requires intervention can be painful or upsetting, especially if you can’t afford to get the help they need. What if your insurance plan doesn’t cover psychological, emotional, or behavioral health services? What if your policy has expensive copays and high deductibles? Does this justify not pursuing treatment?

Affordable Health Insurance Program for Low-Income Children

Many parents cite inadequate insurance coverage as the reason for delaying or refusing treatment for their children with emotional or behavioral disturbances. While the lack of financial resources can be used as an excuse, it is almost always a mistake not to address these issues, as it can adversely affect the quality of the child’s future life.

For residents of North Carolina, there is a health insurance program that can meet or supplement the insurance needs of children from low-income families. North Carolina Health Choice (NCHC) is a free or reduced-cost all-inclusive health coverage program supported by Medicaid. It provides comprehensive health insurance and pays for counseling for qualified children whose ages range from 6 to 18.

The affordable insurance program is offered to children from families whose income is too high to qualify for NC Medicaid but too low to purchase a private or employer-sponsored health insurance policy. NCHC aspires to bring down the number of uninsured children in the state of North Carolina. NCHC Health Care Benefits

Children from families with an income level that is more than 100 to 200 percent of the federal poverty level are entitled to a full package of health care benefits from North Carolina Health Choice, which covers inpatient and outpatient care, including counseling. To receive mental health benefits, the child must be diagnosed with emotional or behavioral symptoms that disrupt normal functioning.

Recognizing the Signs Your Child is in Need of Counseling

Most children act out for various reasons. Experts advise parents not to be overly worried. There are instances, however, where something may really warrant consultation with a professional. It is important to recognize the signs of possible emotional and behavioral issues in your child. For example, if your child has frequent tantrums, it may be an expression of anxiety; difficulty controlling their temper may mean they need professional help for anger or irritability; and unexplained wounds or bloodied clothes may be signs of self-harming behavior. Without treatment, these episodes may get worse with time.

Seeking Professional Intervention for Your Child

If you have decided to seek professional help for your emotionally distressed child, the next question is where to turn. You may wonder how to find the best therapist or facility that can provide the services and treatment your child needs. With NC Health Choice to cover your child’s treatment, counseling becomes affordable, enabling you to seek care from a competent and reputable organization.

You’ll be well served at Carolina Counseling Services – Sanford, NC. An independently contracted counselor will work with your child after determining what appropriate treatment option fits his or her condition. At Carolina Counseling Services, the counselors are both NCHC and Medicaid providers. As an NCHC recipient, you will be required to get a doctor’s referral; CCS is pleased to assist you with this. Just make a call to request an appointment.
