Counseling: The Relief for Your Child’s Anxiety

Counseling: The Relief for Your Child’s Anxiety

Anxiety is an emotion that can be felt in a wide variety of ways when you’re not sure of what lies ahead. It can be felt when you don’t have complete control of events that are about to unfold. If the emotion can disable adults like you, it can be far more frightening with children who can’t even figure out what the feeling is all about.

Understanding Anxiety in Layman’s Language

Anxiety can be better understood as another word for fear. In your moment of fear, your strongest primary instinct is survival. This instinct produces energy in the form of feelings. Simply put, it’s a “fight or flight” mechanism, which means you have the energy to either fight or run away from the source of your fear.

For most people with difficulty managing anxiety, it can feel like the body is going on full throttle, but there’s no place to go, so they tend to be edgy or out of control. For most children, their young age disables them to process anxiety. When left unchecked, the feeling ends up building and feeding on itself.

When Anxiety Manifests in Your Child’s Behavior

It’s normal for children to experience fear and anxiety as they grow up. What is not normal is when your child is crippled with extreme or irrational phobia for unexplainable reasons. Does your child cringe at the idea of going to school, riding the school bus, or attending birthday parties? Is saying “No!” or “I don’t want to” has become a regular part of his or her vocabulary?  Does he or she exhibit difficulty in sitting still and paying attention?

While there are various ways anxiety can be expressed, how do you know when it’s no longer healthy for your child? Make no bones about it. Anxiety is harmful when your child is already exhibiting inappropriate behaviors. It is alarming when your child is too afraid to perform age-appropriate tasks or engage in activities with peers. If your child‘s anxiety is preventing him or her lead a normal life, you need to act fast before it becomes a full-blown disorder that will rob him or her of a happy childhood.
